Das altgerm. Substantiv mhd., ahd. stoc, niederl. stok, engl. stock, schwed. stock bezeichnet seit alters sowohl den Baumstumpf (Wurzelstock oder Klotz) wie den Knüttel. Es gehört wahrscheinlich im Sinne von »abgeschlagener Stamm oder Ast« zu der unter ↑ stoßen dargestellten idg. Wortgruppe. Als Bezeichnung des ausschlagenden Wurzelstocks oder des Haupttriebs einer Pflanze steht »Stock« z. B. in Zusammensetzungen wie »Wein-, Rosen-, Blumenstock«, übertragen in Grundstock »Fonds, Grundbestand« (Ende des 18. Jh.s; vgl. engl. stock »Kapital«). Einen »ausgehöhlten Klotz« bezeichnete es ursprünglich z. B. in Bienenstock (↑ Biene). Auch die seit dem 16. Jh. bezeugten verstärkenden Zusammensetzungen »stockdumm, -taub, -steif« usw. (heute ugs.) gehen von der Bedeutung »Klotz« aus. Schon mhd. stoc hat aus der Bedeutung »Balken« auch den kollektiven Sinn »Geschoss eines Hauses«, eigentlich »Balkenwerk«, entwickelt (daher noch die Zählung »erster, zweiter Stock« usw.). Es wurde in diesem Sinn um 1500 durch die Zusammensetzung Stockwerk verdeutlicht. Von der Bedeutung »Pfahl, Ast« geht die Bedeutung »Stab« (z. B. in »Prügel-, Spazier-, Taktstock«) aus. Hierher gehören auch die Zusammensetzungen Stockfisch »gedörrter Kabeljau« (spätmhd. im 14. Jh. aus mnd. stokvisch, wohl nach dem Trocknen auf Stangengerüsten so benannt) und Stöckelschuh (19. Jh.; zu der Verkleinerungsbildung Stöckel »hoher Absatz«, um 1700). Siehe auch den Artikel ↑ stocken.
